RODGERS, Reverend Roy

Passed away peacefully January 28, 2003 at Nanaimo Regional Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years Greta; sons Gary (Faye) and Keith (Rhonda); grandchildren Lisa, Aaron and Daryl; sister-in-law Shirley (brother Guy predeceased in 1966); as well as many nieces and nephews in B.C. and Newfoundland. Roy was born November 8, 1914 to Malcolm and Elizabeth Rodgers at Old Perlican, Newfoundland. After graduating from Dalhousie University in 1944, Roy spent over 40 years with the United Church of Canada, serving 15 years in the marine missions of Newfoundland, and in B.C. based at Alert Bay and Bamfield. Roy served as minister for 13 years at St. Andrews United Church in Port Alberni; 5 years at Westview United in Powell River; 6 years at St. Stephens United, Qualicum Beach; and 1 year at Trinity United in Nanaimo. During his long career, Roy was active in Rotary, Sea Cadets and the Royal Canadian Legion (Padre). He was appointed Captain in the Naval Reserve in 1968 and received the Canadian Decoration Medal for Service in 1974.

A Memorial Service will be held at 1:30 pm, Monday February 3, in St. Stephen’s United Church, Qualicum Beach, Reverend Phil Spencer officiating.
