BARTLETT, Ruby

December 11, 1928 - August 9, 2008

Ruby was born in Pentwynmawr Gwent, Wales, U.K. Married Terence (Terry) Bartlett on July 24, 1947.

Ruby immigrated to Qualicum Beach, on June 29, 1965 with Terry and their five sons Gary, Rod, Paul, Larry and Tim. When the family arrived in Qualicum Beach in 1965 this was to be the beginning of Ruby’s battle with cancer, through the years she has had many battles - won many - but lost one. The residents of Qualicum Beach were there to help Dad and the boys, (ranging in age from 10 months to 17 years old). So after Ruby got better she started, in her way, of paying back to the community. Ruby volunteered at the S.O.S. shop for 6 years, was CanSurmount Program Chairperson in the 1980’s, Board of Directors for Hospice in the 1990’s, fundraiser for Hospice and sat beside many - many cancer patients beds helping them though their fight with cancer. Some might also remember Ruby working at Eaglecrest Lodge in the 1970’s as well as working at the Cottage Gift Shop in Qualicum Beach.

Ruby was a member of St. Stephen’s United Church in Qualicum Beach at which one of her loves was singing with the church choir. Her years spent at St. Stephens was a great strength and comfort to Mom though the years.

Ruby’s love for her family shone through in her volunteer work. All anyone had to do was ask her about “her boys” and they got a glowing report of each one of them. Her passions ranged from her love of animals which she owned dogs, cats and of course her beautiful Arabian horses. Anytime Mom saw a beautiful eagle or a deer with it’s fawns Mom would get excited and said that living in Qualicum Beach was the most beautiful place to live. In 1993 Terry and Ruby sold their home and acreage on Hollywood Road and bought a motor home and traveled. But as Dad always said, Mom was never happier then when she was on her way back home to her family and friends and of course Qualicum Beach.

Ruby was predeceased by her husband Terry in 1995. Ruby is survived by her five children, Gary Bartlett (Sharron), Rod Bartlett (Barbara), Paul Bartlett (Ann), Larry Bartlett and Tim Bartlett, Grand children Geoffrey, Greg, Katherine, Christy, Donna, Mathew, Shaun, Heather, Jason and Rory, 15 Great Grand Children, on Great Great Grand child. All of us never left Mom’s house without a big hug and we sure will all miss your hugs - Mom.

Ruby’s family would like to express our thank-you to all the Community Home Care Nursing nurses and the Community Home Support caregivers, they helped Mom stay in her home for as long as she could. We would also like to send a very warm thank-you to the staff at Eagle Park facility, you made Mom’s last month safe and comfortable. At Ruby’s request, there will be no service held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the local Hospice Society.
