Sherwood Barnett (‘Barney’)


Passed away on February 21, 2010 at the age of 93. Born January 2, 1917 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the second son of Sherwood Barnett Marshall, Sr. and Agnes Grace (Hess) Marshall, Sherwood was raised in Redlands, California, became an Eagle Scout and took a degree in Commerce at USC before moving to Victoria, British Columbia to join the Canadian Navy in WWII. As a MTB Commander in the English Channel he was a war hero, mentioned in dispatches and wounded in action. He married Flora Betty ‘Buntie’ Sloan in 1941. Returning to Victoria, Sherwood became a lawyer and secretary to the BC Power Commission, a predecessor to BC Hydro. He remarried in 1952 to Maureen Greta Stevenson and moved to California where he became a successful stock broker with his own ‘seat’ on the New York Exchange. He went on to develop convalescent hospitals in California, warehouses in Arizona, and was businessman of the year in San Francisco and chair of the Walnut Creek Red Cross before retiring to Qualicum Beach, B.C. Barney loved people, was positive, intelligent, courtly and generous in his support of others. He travelled extensively, enjoyed yachting and fishing and trying to improve his golf game. Sherwood is survived by his wife of 57 years, Maureen, son David (Carol), daughters Virginia Benton (David) and Nancy (Bill Alder), grandchildren Kenneth (Tracy), Kristina Reid (Patrick), Jonathan and Simon, four great grandchildren, extended family and his many friends. A memorial will be held on Saturday, March 27th , 2010 from 2:30 to 5:00 at 1117 Surfside Drive, Qualicum Beach.
