BENDER, Sophia Viola

Peacefully passed into the presence of the Lord, Thursday, March 23, 2006.

She is survived by her daughter Carol (Bob) Nicol, and predeased by 2 brothers and 2 sisters of Northeast Iowa, many nieces and nephews. Sophia is also survived by her grandson, Cameron (Julie) Nicol and their children, Cassandra, Rebecca and Evan of Lynnwood, Washington; granddaughter, Margie Diaz and daughter Lil Arlem of Cabo San Lucas, and granddaughter, Cara Gregory and children Christina, Dian and Amber of Everett, Washington.

Sophia was born August 2, 1916 near Protivin, Iowa, helped farm in Decorah, Iowa, with her late husband Vernon Bender. She loved the land and raised livestock, 200 chickens, ducks and geese. She was a strong independent pioneer lady. She loved gardening and canned many Mason jars of fruits and veggies to provide food for cold Iowa winters, made homemade sauerkraut in Red Wing 5 gallon crocks. She had a beautiful raspberry patch, everyone came to pick. She enjoyed the “Old Time music and polkas” and loved to dance with her husband after a hard week’s work.

Sophia has been here in Canada for the last 2-1/2 years and had many friends here. She enjoyed a “bonfire” in the fireplace. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her for her feisty personality and her love of people.

Carol and family say good-bye to a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother. May the Lord keep you Sophia as you have been promoted to that citizenship in Heaven.

Memorial to be held at St. Stephens United Church, Qualicum Beach, 2:00 p.m.
