Verona Sharman

March 3, 1926 - January 20, 2017

Mary Verona Sharman (Merchant), a longtime resident of Qualicum Beach, died after a short battle with esophageal cancer on Friday, January 20, 2017.

Verona was raised in Coronation, Alberta and taught school close by in Fleet in the 1940’s. She met her wonderful husband, Gerald Sharman during a softball game where he umpired the game that she was pitching in. They were happily married close to 69 years. Verona and Gerald moved to Qualicum Beach in 1951 where they raised their daughter, Bonnie (Boyd). Verona also worked as a substitute teacher while Bonnie was in elementary school. Gerald and Verona operated the Qualicum Beach Village Garage for 25 years. Verona was a founding member of the Qualicum Beach Curling club and volunteered for many years at Saint Stephens’s church. Verona and Gerald were avid travelers and loving grandparents who devotedly travelled to Alabama, Spain, and Australia to visit Bonnie, her husband Kenneth Boyd, and their 3 grandchildren Eireann, Alison, and Kathryn. In just the last few years Verona finally became a Great Grandma to Jackson, Alexis, Julia, and Cadence. Julia and Cadence both share Verona as their middle name. Verona was not only the best Mother ever but she was also Bonnie’s best friend. Verona also loved Oso, the family dog.

Verona was predeceased by her parents, William and Beatrice Merchant and by her brothers Les, Billy and sister Maralyn and nephew Lorne. She is survived by her husband Gerald Sharman, her daughter Bonnie (Ken) Boyd, brother Hilliard (Helen) Merchant and sister Marietta (William) Glasier. Grandchildren, Eireann (Mike) Zenko, Alison (Warren) Johnstone, and Kathryn (Lucas) Lee.

She is also survived by her sister in laws, Marlene Sharman, partner Ruth Burgess and Marilyn Sharman, (Macdonald) nephew, Gary Sharman; nephew, Brian, Arnie, Kenny, Archie and nieces Sanna and Wanda; also niece, Wendy Thurber, nephew, Jim; niece, Cindy; nephew, Barry (Margaret) Sharman; great nephews, Geoff (Melissa) and Steven (Tania) Sharman; nephew, Brent Sharman; niece, Arlene (Doug) Morrison; great nephew, John and Ian Morrison.

Verona will be missed by her many friends especially long time close friends, Gordon and Ann Parker, whose anniversaries each year were always spent together, Patsy and David Parker who also enjoyed many trips with their Verona and Gerald. She will also be missed by her friends from golfing, the “Friday Frolickers” and her curling friends.

The family would like to thank Dr. Marlene Van Der Weyde and the team of the Vancouver Island community care and hospice program, and the extraordinary nurses and care aides who work within the community care asistance program.

A service will be held on Saturday February 4, at 1 pm. Service

to be held at St Stephens United Church, Qualicum Beach, BC.
