Bill served his country during WWII from 1944 - 1947 first in the Army and then in the Merchant Marines, he fought tirelessly in the pursuit of recognition for the men of the Merchant Marines to be treated equally with their comrades in the Armed forces. A long distance truck driver for most of his life he put on many miles in the big rigs. Bill then moved to Vancouver Island and established his own backhoe business in Nanoose Bay. Bill was very community minded and he was responsible for the building of the Nanoose Bay Community Centre it was said that “Bill’s stubborn determination kept things moving to a successful conclusion. Other communities could learn from this marvelous effort.”

Bill was happiest out on the water in his boat he loved to go fishing and would stay out for hours he very rarely came home empty handed.
