Student safety

Perhaps this question has already been answered and I missed it. But here goes.

I am the grandparent of two young boys who would have attended Parksville Elementary next year.

It is not my intention to wade into the debate about the closure of the schools, or even discuss any possible re-purposing, though I do have my own thoughts.

However, I am left wondering how the many children living in proximity to the former elementary school are expected to safely travel to the current Springwood Middle School. Not only must they cross a highway, dangerous enough, but first they must travel along a long, narrow, straight roadway, Despard Street, without the benefit of sidewalks and a stretch of road on which many drivers reach excessive speeds. Is there a plan to bus all of these students? If not, will steps be taken over the summer to provide a safer walkway set back from the road?

Please assure me that these children will be safe.
