Easter pays homage to pagan gods

So there I was, happy as a clam, minding my own business, doing a little shopping in a local grocery store when I saw one of the staff wearing long, pink bunny ears.

“Right,” I thought. “Easter.”

I was thinking about it later and wondering what the heck rabbits and eggs have to do with Easter. So I did a little research.

It turns out that Eastre was a Saxon fertility goddess and goddess of spring. She owned a hare in the moon which loved eggs and she was sometimes depicted as having the head of a hare. She was also commonly referred to as Eostre, Oestra, Ostara, Freya, Frigga and Frigg, depending on where you lived.

It’s encouraging to see that the old gods haven’t entirely disappeared, at least in our local supermarkets.
