Listen to residents
After reading sections of the draft OCP, I am very concerned about certain language that is being considered for inclusion in our OCP.
Why are photos of The Beach Club featured on two pages of our OCP?
The city is supportive of waiving the DCCs (infrastructure charges) that developers must pay for each affordable unit they build. This means that the developer can walk away with approximately $13,000 per unit, while we, the residents, will be forced to pay these costs with increased taxes.
One section states that an owner/developer of a rental building can be considered by the city to apply for a building strata conversion.
What this means is that an elderly person living on a fixed income and who has been living in their rental home for many years, can be evicted from their home. All the owner/developer has to do is show the city their plans to relocate the residents they have evicted.
Nobody should have to live with this possibility hanging over their heads.
At the all-candidates meeting held prior to the last election, our mayor apologized for not listening to the residents of Parksville and he stated that this will not happen again.
I, for one, am still waiting for him to listen to our residents, because this OCP is all about supporting the developers and not our residents.
