Letters to the Editor

Olympic values?

The two-week extravaganza is over. An incredible $51 billion spent, in a world that has so much need.

I feel sadness and outrage that such a huge part of the world has no clean drinking water. People sleep on the street and go to bed hungry. What has happened to our values as a society?

It is time to look seriously at the Olympics as an event totally out of control, each country trying to outdo the other in more lavish spending. Why not move the Olympics back to Greece, where it all began. Each country sending athletes could contribute to it and finally get the spending under control.

I respect the efforts of the men and women who achieve such high levels of sport, but feel diminished by our values as a society. It is time to mount a campaign for change.
