Re: Qualicum Beach development back to drawing board (The NEWS, April 24)

The mayor and council of Qualicum Beach — the oldest demographic in the country — have just totally upset the apple cart. But in a positive way.

Your recent article that covered Qualicum’s consideration of a new housing development quite appropriately highlighted the key concern that emerged from council’s deliberations, which was that of ‘age restricted housing.’ Qualicum Beach has been working hard to facilitate more new housing development, but almost nothing in this town gets a green light without some scrutiny.

After councillor Skipsey raised a concern as to whether the proposal would be age restricted, I almost couldn’t believe it when I learned of the Mayor’s follow-up statement, “… it should be against the constitution to say it’s age-restricted.” Way to go Mayor Westbroek!

Given that Canada has recently risen to the top of the heap globally in terms of ‘move-to/go-to” nations due to our policies of social and ethnic inclusion, I think it’s impressive that a sleepy little geriatric town like Qualicum can stand up and take major strides toward creating a better home for all of us. Your remark, Mayor Westbroek, knocked it out of the park! I say well done!

Now let’s everybody watch and see if Qualicum Beach can deliver.
