Who decides on goose cull, and based on what evidence?

Re: Parksville may reprise goose cull in 2018 (Sept. 14).

I am writing to you to try and find out why this is considered a good idea.

This procedure was carried out in a very cruel and ruthless way approximately one and a half years ago. It received a lot of controversy for many reasons and now “they” are announcing that they plan to do it again to save the grass.

Who are the “Guardians of the Estuary?” Where is the scientific evidence that says this is a positive thing to do? Why haven’t we been made aware of the process that lead to this decision?

We frequently walk the trails in the (Englishman River) estuary and we have been very concerned about the recent “restoration” project and how that is being done. There are huge piles of material from that restoration being dumped in the forest. It’s a mess and very disruptive to the wildlife which abounds there, not to mention the walking trails. How is that a good solution?

Thursday night there was a news item that the wildlife in Canada has declined significantly in recent history. Many species are drastically down in numbers.

We should be working very hard to protect every living thing that we celebrate here on the Island. It is what makes this place the beautiful place that people are in awe of.

Just go out at dusk and watch with wonder the skeins of geese that fly overhead and then ask, “Why does this cull seem like good idea?”
