BSS, KSS soccer teams win regular season openers

High school soccer got off to a good start in as Oceanside’s two senior boys soccer teams both won their regular season league openers on the road.

On Wednesday, Ballenas Secondary School Whalers’ skipper Larry Stefanek and his side beat Francis Kelsey 2-nil in Mill Bay.

On Thursday, coach Butch Gayton and the Kwalikum Secondary School Kondors carved out a physical 6-1 win over the Spartans in Cedar.

The Whalers compete in the AAA North Island League’s four-team South Division — the Kondors in the nine-team AA North Island League

In their regular season opener Wednesday, BSS scored twice in the first half and rolled to the easy win.

“It should have been five or six goals,” said Stefanek.

Braidy Morrow opened the scoring and Lexis Gorgono notched the insurance marker.

In their regular season opener, KSS led 3-nil at the half.

“They have three real good players and the rest are, how do you say it nicely ... thugs,” Gayton said Sunday, adding, “It was good to get out of Cedar with the win and no injuries.”

Scoring for the Kondors were David Flooker, Liam Chambers, Chavapon Charoenlab, Corey Binnersly, Dane Pearson and Dylan Smith.

Cedar broke KSS keeper Stefan Shafflik’s shutout bid with 10 minutes remaining.

UP NEXT: KSS was on Salt Spring Island Tuesday and take to the pitch at home Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

Ballenas was on the road to Nanaimo Wednesday. The Whalers’ first home game is Oct. 15 against Francis Kelsey (3 p.m. start).
