Oceanside’s U13 Boys soccer team are unbeaten this year, as they blasted Nanaimo 5-0 on home field Saturday.

In action for the first time in 2013, the locals had to weather some early pressure from the Azzuri early.

Oceanside’s speedy striker Jake Whittenberg had himself a day, leading the charge with a hat trick.

Whittenberg opened the scoring about 15 minutes in when he took the ball up the middle and ran the length of the field with a big Nanaimo defender on his heels the whole way, and scored with a hard shot on the dead run from well out, which turned the tide in the game.

Rounding out the scoring was Ethan Smith and Drew Smith (no relation), who capped off the scoring late in the game with his first goal ever when he jumped on a rebound and buried it in the back of the net.

“It was the hardest kick I’ve ever seen him make,” said his coach Robin Volk.

“It was our first game of 2013, but it was our best game of the year by far, an all-round good performance by everybody,” said Volk, adding “some of the things we’ve been teaching them clicked — their give and goes for instance, it was magical for a coach to see it come together.”

The win lifts the local side to 10-1-3 and sitting up top in their Nanaimo and District Soccer League.
