Oceanside’s Mavericks rec team mine silver
Oceanside’s Peewee Mavericks rec hockey team are back home with a silver medal to show for their efforts.
In action in Juan de Fuca for the 10-team Debbie Coooper Memorial Tournament last weekend, the Mavericks dropped their opening game to Campbell River 3-2, but bounced back with three straight wins (6-0 over Juan de Fuca, 3-2 over Vancouver and 3-0 over PoCo) to earn a place in the tournament final, where they came up short against the Victoria Ice Hawks.
Mavericks’ goalie Shay Frederickson “stood on his head and carried us through the tournament with two shutouts in five games,” said his coach Kevin Kivela. “The rest of the team just grinded it out they played really well.”
In the tournament prior back in the beginning of December the team took gold at a 10-team tourney in Port McNeil.
The Mavericks and their counterparts close out their season in Parksville this weekend with the annual Oceanside Peewee Spring Hockey Tournament.
“This is our last tournament and then we’re done for the year. We’re looking forword to it, it should be a good one,” said Kivela.
