Arrowsmith tennis action
If you walk by the tennis courts at Springwood Park in Parksville any day of the week, you may be able to watch members of the Arrowsmith Tennis Club in action. While club tennis drop-in sessions are fun, some members are going beyond the club to pursue a more competitive side of the game.
A ladies team from ATC participated in the North Island Inter Club Ladies League.
According to ATC’s Hans Laue there were 10 ladies on the team who played against three other teams from Nanaimo and Duncan. The Arrowsmith team came in first in the 3.5 division with 235 points, while the Westwood 2 (Nanaimo) team was second with 202 points.
Winning the league qualified ATC to participate in the Miele Team Tennis Provincial Tournament sponsored by Tennis B.C. in Richmond Aug. 9-11.
Arrowsmith fielded a team of eight ladies in singles and doubles. Arrowsmith played four other teams from across the province and came in second in their division.
The first place team from the Interior beat Arrowsmith by only one point, said Laue, adding “there were many close matches and the participants thoroughly enjoyed the event.”
In other ATC news, individual club members have also been competing elsewhere.
Christine Aubin and Mike Bellis won the Mixed Doubles B Division at the Lewis Park Tournament in Comox during the same weekend. And, as in past years, several Arrowsmith members participated in the BC Senior Games which were held this year in Kamloops Aug. 20-23.
“They all put in strong performances and were pleased with the experience.”
Isabelle Armstrong and her partner Shirley Craddock from Nanaimo won a silver medal.
GAME ON: ATC will be holding its internal annual championships during the first two weeks of September. Members of the public can watch the action at the Springwood courts.
Later in the fall, there is another round of inter-club matches to look forward to, and regular club play continues year-round.
