It was another win over another top-10 team in the province for the Ballenas Secondary Whalers senior girls as they disposed of the Wellington Wildcats 55–48 in Nanaimo Tuesday.

Chelsea Hoey scored 15 points on the night to lead the Whalers in scoring, while Makayla Hoey and Brittany Britz pitched in with 10 points each. Chloe Dodd had six points on the night as well with two huge three pointers.

Ballenas found themselves down 16–5 after the first quarter and were trailing by 15 at one point in the first half. It wasn’t looking good for the Whalers as they headed into the third quarter but the girls stayed focused and things started to turn their way.

The Whalers came out hard in the third quarter and erased a six point Wellington lead to take control, leading 39–32 heading into the fourth. Ballenas kept their foot on the gas and closed out the game 55–48.

The Whalers have now beaten the Mark Isfeld Ice, ranked fourth in B.C., and ninth place Wellington in the past week. It’s a big feather in the cap for the Whalers who were on the outside looking in at the start of the season.

“Both Isfeld and Wellington were ranked in the top 10 and they were looking to be our toughest challenges on the calendar,” said head coach Darryl Britz. “We had those games marked down and we have been gearing up for both of those games all season.”

The Whalers are headed down Island for the Victoria City Police Tournament. They played host Saint Michaels University School at noon Wednesday and face Point Grey from Vancouver on Friday with a 10:15 a.m. tip-off.
