Midget Generals take Isle division
The Oceanside Midget Generals Rep Team (Tier 2) won the Vancouver Island Division 2 league banner last weekend.
All the rep teams finished league play and the midget rep squad won their league with a record of seven wins, three losses and two ties. The Midget Generals headed into the weekend needing to win one of their last two games.
“Friday’s game got off to a slow start. We weren’t taking enough shots at the net and play was sloppy,” said head coach Matt Woods. “It wasn’t until the last 10 minutes of the third when we started shooting the puck more and it created a lot of chances for us in front of the net. Three of our four goals came in the last 10 minutes of the game but we just ran out of time and ended up losing that one 5–4.”
The Midget Gens wound up beating the Juan de Fuca Grizzlies 9–4 to capture the banner in a blowout.
“The team played really well with the banner on the line. We struggled all season with taking penalties and we recorded one of our least penalized games against Juan De Fuca on Sunday. We spread out the offensive production, which was nice to see, and had a great game from our goalie, Hayden Kellett,” coach Woods said.
Also earning praise were captain Jordan Freeman and assistant captains Jarrett Weme, Austin Gibson and Ben Mohl for their leadership on the ice.
“We knew that we were capable of beating (Juan De Fuca) and the team kept their focus and stayed disciplined, which helped us get the W. It was a great way to wrap up the season and now we will get ready to prepare for the playoffs.”
The pee wee, bantam, and midget teams start their playoffs this weekend with the goal of making provincials March 16-20.
