Parksville’s Sandi Mitchell survived a takeout attempt by rival skip Mike Ward of Qualicum Beach on the final ball to prevail in the 10th annual Qualicum Foods Indoor Mixed Triples lawn bowling tournamnent at Qualicum Beach Lawn Bowling Club Sunday, April 2.

Mitchell and teammates Jim Muir of Parksville and Dean Thomson of Nanaimo rolled to a 7-3 win when Ward’s missed takeout allowed Mitchell to extend a slender one-ball lead in the championship match. The winners were then presented the tourney trophy by Qualicum Foods manager Ken Bowerman.

The two-day tournament drew 36 players from Qualicum Beach, Parksville and Nanaimo. As all are members of the Qualicum Beach club for the winter indoor season — the club has the only indoor green on Vancouver Island — several of the teams mixed players from different communities.

Ward claimed silver with Parksville’s Len Canning and fellow Qualicum Beach bowler Audrey Isbell. Third place went to skip Andy Burton of Parksville, who rolled with Qualicum Beach members Ken Wellwood, Leone King and Janice Baird. They outlasted the Qualicum Beach trio of Bob and Joyce Findlay and Joe Randazzo, who settled for fourth place.

The outdoor lawn bowling season is set to begin in Qualicum Beach and at Parksville Lawn Bowling Club in early May. Next fall, Qualicum Beach will mark the 10th-year anniversary of its indoor green with a special event. Details will be announced as the the next indoor season nears.
