Adrienne Burrows is happy that the popular Summer by the Sea Street Market is happening again in Parksville.

The owner of a small home-based business, Buttercream Bliss Bakery, said this is her fourth year participating in the summer market, located at the Parksville Visitor Centre for 2021 and taking place Tuesdays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

COVID-19 protocols are in place and enforced.

The market is organized by the Parksville and District Chamber of Commerce. It features approximately 30 vendors, an eclectic mix of local merchants artisans, craftspeople, farmers, entertainers and food trucks.

Burrows said markets such as Summer by the Sea are invaluable to small home-based businesses like hers.

“Being a home-based baker, we are excluded from any kind of wholesale or online sales except through the community market,” said Burrows. “So it’s only direct in-person sales at markets that we are able to sell our products. Last year everything I had planned was cancelled, except the Summer by the Sea market. So personally, I am happy that it’s back again.”

Burrows brings her home-made gourmet cupcakes, confectionery dessert bars and giant cookies, as well as different candies. She said her bestsellers are the chocolate peanut butter cupcake and salted caramel.

With the COVID-19 restrictions easing up, Burrows is taking advantage of the many farmers’ markets and events happening not only in Parksville Qualicum Beach but also in Nanaimo and Duncan.

“This is a wonderful time to come and check out markets,” said Burrows. “Business is certainly picking up now as more customers are coming out.”
