LETTER: Blown away by generosity

I have not quite attained my first year here in Parksville, having moved from Ontario, and I am almost at the point of not comparing here and there!

However I always prided myself on coming from Hamilton as despite some rough times, the people there were and are so generous of spirit, giving where often they had nothing to spare.

When I moved here, I started volunteering with Special Olympics and have derived so much satisfaction, what a wonderful group of people.

Now that we are into full swing, pun intended, for our Special Olympics Oceanside Charity Golf Tournament (Saturday, June 9 at Pheasant Glen Golf Resort), it has been such an eye opener contacting people for donations, sponsorship or golf foursomes. As I said at the beginning, I thought Hamilton had it made when it came to community support but I have to say I am blown away by the generosity in Parksville Qualicum Beach!

From individuals to businesses, to media, your support is really appreciated!

I have even been thanked for being involved with Special Olympics. It was wonderful to be able to tell people that thanks to their generosity, 100 per cent of funds raised at the tournament goes back to the athletes and we just had one local athlete compete at Nationals in P.E.I. in bowling and will have two more going to Nationals in N.S. for swimming; not bad for a community of our size, supporting 48 athletes. That’s 16 per cent of our small group achieving national team status — amazing.

I consider myself extremely fortunate to be living, not only in paradise, but among such generous people. Kudos to all who are supporting our golf tournament, you have really impressed me, thank you!
