Book sale aids the animals

The Scotiabank handed over a cheque for $500 raised through the book sale to SPCA shelter manager Nadine Durante on Tuesday.

When it came time to decide which groups to support with the proceeds from a two-month book sale, the management and staff at the Parksville Scotiabank agreed the SPCA was a worthy candidate.

The bank handed over a cheque for $500 raised through the book sale to shelter manager Nadine Durante on Tuesday.

The gently-used books were donated by staff but also by some of their customers, who twigged on to what they were doing.

For branch manager Penny Schantz, that support was more than theoretical. It was highly personal.

“We chose the SPCA because we love animals,” she said. “As well, I have a cat now that the SPCA adopted. It’s a kitten, a real brat. Also Nadine and the others were very helpful during the loss of my dog. They were very friendly and helped me adopt a cat right away.”
