With robins starting to arrive in Oceanside

In much of Canada, robins are considered a harbinger of spring, and Oceanside is no exception.

That hopeful sign of better weather to come has begun flitting, hopping and worm-pulling around grassy areas in the region, says Sandra Gray, organizer of the annual Christmas Bird Count and other avian-themed events.

“Robins do migrate,” she said. “They follow the food, so as long as the arbutus berries, rose hips and various other wild fruit that’s in the forest last, they are going to stay around. When it’s finished they move on.”

Gray said while most robins move south for the winter, like the Brant geese, there are usually a few that remain in the area 12 months of the year.

“It’s a little bit early for robins to return, but definitely soon,” she said. “It’s very hard to predict. Once it starts warming up a little bit more, robins are one of the first birds to establish a spot in the yard.”
