The annual BC Thanksgiving Food Drive is happening now in the Parksville/Qualicum Beach area.

This year’s food drive began on Sept. 17 and will run until Sept. 22, with a goal of visiting 3,800 homes.

Between Monday and Wednesday of collection week, volunteers delivered flyers attached to a donation bag to homes along assigned routes.

Flyers offer instructions on how to donate; anyone wishing to make a donation of non-perishable food is asked to place them in the bag and leave it on their doorstep before 9:30 a.m. on collection day. Volunteers will walk back through their neighbourhoods to collect these donations. The flyer will indicate if your collection day is Friday, Sept. 21 or Saturday, Sept. 22.

All food donations will be delivered to The Salvation Army Food Bank on Wembley Road in Parksville. If your neighbourhood did not receive collection bags, you are encouraged to drop off donations directly to the Food Bank.

The BC Thanksgiving Food Drive is an annual event which began in Burnaby in 2009 and has spread to more than 50 cities in the province and helps thousands of needy individuals and families throughout British Columbia.

In B.C., more than 100,000 people turn to their local food bank each year to help feed themselves and their families. Almost 40 per cent of recipients are under the age of 18.

In 2017, more than 526,000 lbs.[valued at more than $1,000,000] of food was collected by about 6,000 volunteers, and was sorted and delivered to community food banks.
