Get ready to walk for MVIHES

Event will focus on the Englishman River

Five kilometres isn’t all that far to walk, or even jog, says Deb Nichol, but doing so can make a big difference — not only for your health but for the financial health of the Mid-Vancouver Island Habitat Enhancement Society as well.

Nichol hopes it can anyway, because she’s organizing a special five-kilometre walk and run event as a fundraiser for the society on June 12, starting at 10 a.m.

“We are trying to institute an annual walk and run that would happen around the Englishman River every year,” she said. “The money we raise would become part of our core funding.”

Currently, the group applies for government grants to complete specific projects, which the different levels of government can access. This, she said, will take the group to a new level.

“We hope to have a really fun event, with people coming to the Englishman to enjoy a day walking or running along the river,” Nichol said.

The entry fee is $25 for adults and $15 for seniors, while children under age 14 can enter for free.

Registration forms can be picked up at The Running Room in Nanaimo or they can be downloaded at  www.runningroom.com under the races tab.
