Jeanie Gray of Kwalikum Secondary School wrote a poem that earned her first place in the Annual Youth Remembrance Contest at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 76 in Qualicum Beach.
The Grade 8 student’s poem ‘We Remember Them’ captured the hearts of the local judges. The poem will progress to judging at the Central Vancouver Zone and has a chance to advance to provincial and national level.
Gray’s winning poem:
We Remember Them
Scattered across the frosted grass
Remind us of the lives lost
So long ago
We remember the gruesome, ugly scenes
Frozen in time
Innocent young souls gone from the Earth Forever
As we bow our heads in solemn remembrance
To the brave soldiers who fought for our country
The trumpet plays an eerie, slow tune
That sends shivers down our spines
We remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice
We thank those who fought in wars for our freedom
We honour those who live with painful memories
Of family or friends they would never see again.
We remember them.
