Local youth write The News

Local paper takes on a younger look

Extra, extra read all about it!

Over the past few weeks, the young people with whom I am privileged to work have been striving to write an article for this newspaper. The students thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to learn from Mr. Steven Heywood’s advice on journalism and to take on the challenge of writing for The News.

The class discussed topics for consideration; and in doing so, it became very clear our young people are concerned and active citizens. Many of these students have also spent time volunteering to build houses in developing countries, with local fire departments or non-profit organizations. Many students have become active in relief efforts to those in need overseas. Each writer wishes to be a contributing member of our community and has written on issues that give them cause for pride or concern.

On behalf of these students, I would like to thank Steven Heywood and The News for generously donating time and space to this Grade 12 class. The class hopes the community will enjoy the stories; and as their teacher, I hope that this is just one chapter in each student’s success story.        — Kati Worthen, KSS teacher
