After a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mount Arrowsmith Rhododendron Society (MARS) is reviving its two annual spring events in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area; the Rhododendron Show and Sale on April 23, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.; and the Mother’s Day Garden Tour on May 7 and May 8, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
As the former site was not available, the Rhododendron Garden and Plant Sale has moved to the Qualicum Beach Curling Rink (644 Memorial Ave.) beside the Farmers’ Market on Memorial Avenue in Qualicum Beach.
“We wanted everyone to know we’ve moved this year,” said Kathy Loyer, co-chair of the plant sale. “It’s somewhat smaller, but there will be lots of plants for sale. Instead of a judged show we are planning an exhibition of the rhodos that are blooming at that time. The plants are heavily budded this year so it should make for a wonderful display.”

Admission to the sale will be free.
Following in May, MARS will present its 29th Mother’s Day Garden Tour with 11 gardens on display in Parksville and Qualicum Beach.
“All of the garden owners have been most gracious – almost eager to show off their gardens. We have artists working at some sites, and master gardeners to answer questions at others”, said Linda Derkach, chair of the project. “Two gardens are also fundraisers for local causes; Qualicum Beach Hospice and Oceanside Haven House.”
Tickets for the tour on May 7 and 8 are available at Mulberry Bush Book Store in Qualicum Beach, and Fireside Books and Buckerfield’s in Parksville.
