Nanoose Bay Elementary was recently presented a Regional Pollinator Award for their efforts in food literacy.
Teacher Chris Brown and others at the school have been developing a seed library, school garden and lessons in sustainable agriculture over the past several years.
Farm To School BC awards one school in the Central Island region each year for their work in outstanding food literacy initiatives.
“The students and school staff have worked so hard making these projects happen, its satisfying to be recognized,” said Brown.

Food Literacy programming has become an important part of student curriculum and skill development in B.C. It includes everything from growing food, to cooking, to making healthy food choices and learning about sustainable food systems. It includes Indigenous food systems and culturally appropriate food choices.
Empowering students with the skills and abilities to make food choices that are good for them is a preventative health measure and builds applicable skills they can use for the rest of their lives.
