A local cadet got the chance to see what it’s like being a sailor with the Royal Canadian Navy this summer.

Cadet Trey Pennington, with the 296 Esquimalt Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps in Parksville, learned some of the skills of being a sailor at sea aboard an ORCA-class patrol vessel during a one-day sail, according to an HMCS QUADRA Cadet Training Centre news release out of Comox.

Pennington, now 14, started in the Navy League and has continued his passion for the open water through the sea cadet program for the past two years, reads the release.

“He joined due to the heavy influcence from his family’s involvement in the Navy League, the Sea Cadets and the Canadian Armed Forces,” it said.

Every year, cadets from across the country attend training centres like the HMCS QUADRA Cadet Training Centre in the Comox Valley, providing them unique training and experience like Pennington’s day aboard the ORCA class vessel.
