In recognition of World Polio Day on Oct. 24, the Rotary Club of Parksville will donate the proceeds of its weekly bottle drive to Polio Plus this Saturday (Oct. 22).

Rotary has been at the centre of the worldwide effort to eradicate polio for more than three decades, according to a news release by Rotary Club of Parksville.

It launched Polio Plus in 1985, and until recently, all but two countries in the world had achieved polio-free status — Pakistan and Afghanistan.

“Sadly, polio has reappeared in New York State, which is a reminder that it is only a plane ride away,” the release read. “Thus Rotarians are redoubling their efforts to achieve the goal of eradication.”

The club will be at Speedy Glass in Parksville from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for its recycling drive and all donations will go toward Rotary’s “End Polio Now” campaign.
