The Lions Ventureland Playground in Parksville Community Park will continue to see accessibility upgrades thanks to recently announced federal funding.

Harjit S. Sajjan, minister of international development and minister responsible for the Pacific Economic Development Agency of Canada (PacifiCan) announced $300,000 in funding on July 19.

The grant application was submitted last year and, along with a $100,000 city contribution, Parksville will continue on to the next phase of rubber surfacing and associated work, according to a news release by the city.

“The Lions Ventureland Playground is a popular family destination and one of the best playgrounds in central Vancouver Island,” said Mayor Ed Mayne. “We appreciate the funding grant from the Canadian Community Revitalization Fund which provides an opportunity for the city to facilitate continued upgrades in the playground and allow children of all abilities to enjoy the space.”

The rubber surfacing is wheelchair accessible, provides consistent impact absorbing qualities and lower maintenance costs over the long term, according to the city.
