RDN happy to see event return

The annual Polar Bear Splash in Parksville is back and ready to usher in the New Year.

It will be hosted by the Regional District of Nanaimo recreation department on Jan. 1 at the Parksville Community Park Beach at noon.

Participants eager to take the New Year’s Day plunge into the chilly waters are advised to arrive between 11:30 a.m. and noon to check in at the RDN table and receive a commemorative button. They will also be entered to win one of the door prizes.

Organizer Amanda Morency said this will help them keep track on how many swimmers participate.

The New Year splash, which was cancelled a year ago due to COVID-19, will have the Parksville Fire Department and the Arrowsmith Search and Rescue on hand to provide support

“We are happy for the event to return this year,” said Morency.

Since it is an outdoor event, proof of vaccination and masks are not currently required but the RDN will continue to monitor and adapt to the latest Public Health Orders.
