Qualicum Beach grad wins academic medal

Shelley Melissa of Qualicum Beach honored for her hard work

Shelley Melissa of Qualicum Beach, a graduate of Vancouver Island University’s Practical Nursing program, received the BC Lieutenant Governor’s silver medal at the Health and Human Services spring graduation ceremony recently.

The award recognizes excellence in studies and positive contributions to the life of the university and/or community by a student graduating from a full-time vocational or career program of less than two years duration. Melissa launched a career change in August 2011.

She completed VIU’s Dental Assistant program instead and worked in that field for 18 years. When her two children began to grow up, she returned to school.

“I loved the Practical Nursing program,” said Melissa. “It’s been a rewarding experience and has enhanced my health care background.” — Vancouver Island University
