Qualicum Beach Secondary School graduates celebrate their 50th reunion

Grads from B.C., Alberta, Ontario and even South America made the journey

A lingering pandemic, long drives and flights, ever-changing ferry schedules and concerning weather conditions did not discourage the Qualicum Beach Secondary School (QBSS) Class of 1972 from meeting for its 50th reunion.

The event was nearly 15 months in the making and by all accounts a very successful one. Grads from all across B.C., Alberta, Ontario and even South America made the journey for the highly anticipated homecoming.

QBSS no longer stands, but its spirit lingers in the hearts of its former students. Those classmates who had passed on were also remembered at the event. Approximately 100 people attended the various activities with slightly less than half being ’72 grads.

The 1972 valedictorian, Donna Walsh Hay, worded it perfectly: “It was fun, inclusive, welcoming and most of all served as a celebration of who we were and who we are today.”

The reunion was celebrated at three different venues during the June 10-12 weekend, with some classmates seeing each other for the first time in 50 years.

Some grads joked they knew they were getting old when everyone had left the final party at The Beach Club Resort by 11:15 p.m., despite having the room until 1 a.m.
