Three School District 69 (Qualicum) students were awarded scholarships by the Pieter de Reuver Foundation on Wednesday, June 27.

Grade 12 Kwalikum Secondary student Emily Godfrey received the Award of Excellence scholarship in the amount of $5,000 to assist in achieving her post-secondary goals.

The award criteria included excellence as a learner, commitment to community service or volunteer work, and contributing to the “culture and fabric of the school through active participation in arts, athletics, leadership or service,” according to an SD69 news release.

The award is also for a student who’s going directly to an accredited Canadian post-secondary institution the school year following their graduation.

Jessica Kennedy of KSS and Kayley Johns of Ballenas Secondary School were the recipients of $750 each through the new Rising Above awards, created through a partnership with the Pieter de Reuver Foundation and SD69.

These two awards are meant to recognize students “who have faced adversity and have not only risen up against the odds, but are demonstrating a commitment to continue their education.”

In the news release, Pieter de Reuver says, “We are pleased to be working with the Qualicum school district to provide financial support for three graduating students and their families in order to ensure that their dream of a topnotch post-secondary education can become a reality.”

A brief award presentation was held June 27 at the Parksville Civic and Technology Centre.
