The Rotary Club of Qualicum Beach Sunrise recently donated $5,000 to the District 69 Backpack Program.
A cheque presentation was held, attended by Qualicum Beach Mayor and the founder of the program, Virginia Worcester.
The program, which relies mostly on donations, was created to make sure children do not go hungry during the weekends. Children receive a bag of food that is easy to prepare, nutritious, non-perishable and easy to eat.

The program, referred to as ‘Weekend Without Hunger’ has received much support from the community, including the Rotary Club and School District 69.
“As poverty rates rise globally the childhood hunger rates also climb,” said Worcester. “Our schools noticed an increase of children coming to school hungry and implemented breakfast and lunch programs many of our children have come to rely on. Out of this tragic reality the Backpack Program was born. We send home a backpack full of food to families in need to ensure that children have food on the weekend and can return to school on Monday, fed and ready to learn. After all the children are our future and with a little food, water, and love they will grow into tomorrow’s community.”
