As summer transforms into autumn, the Qualicum Beach Seedy Saturday Association (QBSSA) encourages residents to save their vegetable and flower seeds for the upcoming Qualicum Beach Seedy Saturday event on Feb. 4, 2023.
The seeds can either be traded at the association’s Seed Swap or donated to package and sell at the venue, according to a news release by QBSSA.
“If you’re saving seeds, you are well advised to please be patient; a common pitfall is not waiting until the seeds turn brown before harvesting them,” reads the release. “A useful tip is to tie a brown paper bag around the seed heads on the plant until they reach maturity.”

QBSSA recommends the Salt Spring Seeds website as a resource for seed-saving information and helpful advice on saving seeds from different varieties of plants. It also suggests www.saveseeds.org, www.almanac.com and www.gardenersworld.com.
If you have saved seeds from this year’s garden projects you wish to donate to QBSS, please contact Kim by email (trilliums@shaw.ca) to arrange for pick up.
