Members of the Schooner Cove Yacht Club from Nanoose Bay sailed to nine nearby islands to clean up the area.
Due to COVID-19, the club has not been able to stage this annual event for the last two years. On May 10, 18 volunteers came out and ventured to the nearby islands to haul non-compostable debris and garbage.
The collection of garbage was ferried back to the Fairwinds Marina and loaded onto two trucks. A total of 325 pounds of garbage was collected that day. It was transported to the landfill with the tipping fee paid for from the Regional District of Nanaimo’s Community Clean-up Program.

To conclude the day, the volunteers celebrated their successful event with an on-the-dock barbecue.
Organizers indicted they all went home exhausted but with smiling faces and feeling good for a job well done.
Schooner Cove Yacht Club has been performing the service for approximately 15 years. The club praised the generosity of Fairwinds Marina and staff for their equipment and help, as well as main sponsor Alex Goldenberg of MINS Technologies in Nanoose Bay.
