The Van Isle Shriners will celebrate the 28th edition of the show and shine car show, coming up in Parksville on Sunday, August 6.

The show has been under the stewardship of the Shriners group since 2014.

The event attracts upwards of 300 cars, ranging from the classic to the exotic, and generally pulls in about $15,000 each year, organizers said. The money goes towards the Shriners of B.C. and Yukon Child Services Society, which supports child and family transportation to Shriners pediatric hospitals, as well as the Shriners in your Community Fund, which helps provide special medical equipment for children in the Nanaimo, Parksville, Qualicum Beach area.

“It’s all about the kids for us,” said Ralph Rayner, one of the Shriners organizing the Show and Shine.

Before the main event on Aug. 6, a car cruise will start at the A&W parking lot in Parksville at about 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 5 and drive through to Qualicum Beach. Last year, about 125 cars took part, said Rayner.

The car show will award 30 trophies in various categories — some based on type of car, others based on the decade the car was made, as well as Best in Show trophies.

There are also more than 60 door prizes to be won by participants, and 50/50 draws, said Rayner.

“It’s quite an undertaking,” he said of the event, but added he and the Van Isle Shriners are proud of what they’ve been able to accomplish with it.

The show and shine takes place at Parksville Community Park, with gates opening at 7 a.m., a pancake breakfast running from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., hot dogs and hamburgers sold from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and trophies presentations beginning at 1:30 p.m.
