The Greig Greenway Society has raised another $1,000 for the Natures Trust of BC's campaign to purchase and rehabilitate 13 acres of undeveloped land at 130 Shelly Rd. in Parksville.
The fundraising campaign headed by the Nature Trust of BC, a non-profit land conservation organization, aims to raise $350,000 to purchase and remediate the property.
Shawn Lukas, west coast conservation land management and major project co-ordinator for the Nature Trust, accepted the cheque.
The society raised $2,000 for the campaign in August. The City of Parksville has committed $1.8 million to preserve the Shelly Road property.
The two-year-old Greig Greenway Society galvanized support from the Parksville community in 2023 when an undeveloped 140 acre property at 1465 Greig Road, with 1,300 metres fronting on the Englishman River, came before council for re-development with a proposal for 800 units. Council turned down the rezoning proposal and OCP amendments with councillors stating that they heard the community’s call to preserve natural spaces.
