Regional District of Nanaimo Electoral Area F director Leanne Salter has made a notice of motion for staff to prepare a report on process required to rename the Errington Community Park.

The park is currently going through significant updates that include a playground and other recreational amenities.

Students at Errington Elementary School and Heartwood Homeschool are excited about the improvements at the park located adjacent to Errington War Memorial Hall and is used by the Errington Farmers Market. They approached Salter with the idea of renaming the park.

“They would like to come up with names and then vote on the names and then whatever name comes out on top, that would be the name for the park,” said Salter.

The motion, presented at the RDN board’s regular meeting on March 22, directs staff to come up with a report on a process to rename Errington Community Park that will include input from the school children.

At this time, Salter said they are just requesting a report from staff whether they can proceed with the idea under the RDN’s park naming policy.

General manager of Recreation and Parks Tom Osborne indicated the idea is slightly outside the scope of the policy and will use it as a reference in making the report.

Electoral Area E (Nanoose Bay) director Bob Rogers appreciates the student initiative.

“But what I wouldn’t want to have this motion do is indicate to those students and to the school that’s the name that would be finalized because I think there are a lot of community people and First Nations and others who may want to have input on the naming of a park,” said Rogers.

The RDN board unanimously endorsed the motion.
