BSS Students are putting on the musical Beauty and the Beast March 6

A musical for all ages is being presented at the Whalebone Theatre, and the elaborate costumes are sure to turn some heads.

“All these people turn into household objects,” said the director of the play and theatre teacher at Ballenas Secondary School (BSS), Doug Campbell. “So we had to construct a person who changes into a clock, a person who changes into a wardrobe,  and somebody else becomes a candelabra.”

If you haven’t guessed already, the production is Beauty and the Beast and it will play at BSS March 6, 8 and 9.

Campbell said a group of students who performed in Into The Woods last year were excited to do another musical and wanted one that all ages would enjoy. Collectively they came up with Beauty and the Beast.

Campbell said he is very impressed with the level of acting and singing in the show and he’s thrilled about the camaraderie that has taken place.

“The best part for me is how this cast has come together. The teamwork has been great, excellent collaboration and good skill level on everyone’s part.”

Two actors have split the role of Belle and both have talented singing voices.  Belle Warner-Varney will play the lead role of the same name, as well as the role of musical director for all singers in the play. The other Belle, Kimiko Fraser, has designed a lot of the costumes and is helping build them as well.

The shop teacher constructed the clock and wardrobe frames and former teacher Louise Wright finished them with trim and fabric.

“It’s been a real community effort across the board,” he said. “It’s kinda cool.”

The musical runs Wednesday, March 6, Friday, March 8 and Saturday, March 9 at 7 p.m. and there will also be a 2 p.m. matinee March 9. Tickets are at the door for $8 for adults, students and seniors $5, and there is a family rate of $20 for a family of four.
