Author Bowen to lecture

Historical society presentation to feature history of Italian immigrants

The Qualicum Beach Historical Society is teaming up with the Qualicum Beach Family History Society to present something very special.

The March 6 meeting will feature a talk by B.C. author Lynne Bowen, who will provide a glimpse into her new work, Whoever Gives us Bread. The book, said museum manager Netanja Waddell, details the lives of Italian immigrants.

Published by Douglas and McIntyre, the book tells the tales of individual immigrants in a loosely chronological story that begins in the early 1860s as Italians fled grinding poverty in their own country to ranch cattle, pan for gold, work on the railroads or anything else they could think of to get ahead in this new land.

The meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre and is open to the public by donation.
