Three classical musicians have collaborated for the first time to perform for The Old School House’s Music on Sunday concert series.
Ingrid Chiang, bassoonist, Emma Ringrose, oboist, and Rista Tonita, pianist, are set to play for TOSH’s livestreamed concert Sunday, Oct. 25.
This will also be the first time that all three perform together in concert.
Chiang was initially asked to play the concert series approximately six months ago, as a solo act.
“As a wind instrument player, one hour of blowing would have been too much,” she said, and so decided to ask Ringrose and Tonita to collaborate. Ringrose and Chiang have played together many times, as Chiang is currently in her 20th season with the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, and Ringrose is currently the acting principal oboe of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra.
Tonita said the first time she’d met Ringrose was just a month ago at their first rehearsal and had only just met Chiang in March.

“Ingrid just heard me play a recital at UBC and then asked if I’d be willing to collaborate in the future, and I said ‘absolutely!’”
Though excited about the opportunity to perform together, Chiang is intrigued about performing for a livestreamed concert for the first time.
“I just personally love having an audience. When you talk to them and you play it for them, you can see their expressions,” she said.
For the Oct. 25 show, Chiang said there will be six pieces in the program, all she’s personally selected and “really loves.”
“It’s not totally difficult to play, but I thought it was appropriate for Sunday afternoon,” she said.
Ringrose described the lineup as a “fun mixture of recognizable and not-so-recognizable music.” The various pieces will include solo bassoon with piano, solo oboe with piano, and a few where they all play together.
The TOSH’s Oct. 25 Music on Sunday show costs $18, and will start at 2:30 p.m. It will be an hour in length, and include a ‘Q&A’ segment after the performance.
