Rod and Gun performance set for 9 p.m.

The Diva Dolls burlesque troupe will return to Parksville this month after a three-year absence.

The Nanaimo-based group will perform at the Rod and Gun (163 Alberni Hwy) at 9 p.m. on July 9.

Dot Naylor, alter ego Brandi Blaze, said she is excited to dance in front a live audience again, after taking some time to recover from hip replacement surgery last year.

“It’s an incredible feeling being on stage,” she said. “When I go on stage, it’s like a light goes off and I turn into a completely different person. I have a different name, a different look and I have a different attitude and personality.”

The show also includes a comedic aspect, group numbers, costumes, plus great music, said Naylor, who formed Diva Dolls 12 years ago after seeing a Victoria-based troupe perform in Nanaimo. Not long after, she got her foot in the door as the stage manager for a local burlesque act.

“I helped them with their first show,” Naylor said. “One show and I couldn’t stay backstage anymore. They weren’t looking for any new members so I started my own.”

She found her first members through friends and newspaper ads, but soon the idea began to spread through word of mouth and Naylor had a cast of seven, although people tend to come and go over the years. The July 9 show will include a few new members, she said.

A performance at the Queens in Nanaimo in May was the troupe’s first in about three years, including three months of Naylor recovering from her surgery.

She started noticing problems with her hip right after the group’s final pre-COVID show. The symptoms worsened as she continued to work her day job.

“I knew it was coming,” Naylor said. “I was born with a dislocated hip and I was always told that I would one day need the surgery, so I’m glad it’s done and over with.”

Diva Dolls did not do any virtual shows during the pandemic, due to Naylor’s surgery, so the group was a bit nervous at first, but that did not last long.

“I love providing entertainment for people and hearing them react to our performances,” she said.

“When they’re cheering and hollering, it just makes you want to give it more. Just give everything you got.”

Tickets are $22.23 and are available online at Eventbrite and the Rod and Gun.
