The ECHO Youth Showcase returns to live performance at the Village Theatre (110 Second Ave. West in Qualicum Beach) this June with a one-act play and dance routine.

The showcase, live-streamed last year, runs June 3 to June 5 and features young actors, directors, dancers and production crew from Kwalikum Secondary School, Ballenas Secondary, Nanaimo District Secondary School (NDSS), the homeschool community and community volunteers, according to a news release by ECHO Players.

The one-act play, Off Road, revolves around some high school students whose car breaks down on the side of the road, forcing them to make small talk.

“It’s a memory play, so they’re constantly thrown into these flashbacks where they relive old memories and deal with anxiety, depression,” said Elena Sales, who is directing her first play. Off Road deals with deep subject matter, but there are a few comedic moments, she added.

The play was cast in February and the students have been rehearsing since early April, according to Sales. Off Road was written by Julianna Gross.

The showcase also includes an original dance called “Fall From Innocence”, created and performed by the NDSS Dance Team, according to the release.

Performances are on Friday, June 3 at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, June 4 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, June 5 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students and can be purchased in person at the Village Theatre Box Office (250-752-3522) or online through the ECHO Players website.
