The unique sound of handbells will highlight a special service at 3 p.m. on Dec. 15 at St. Mark's Anglican Church in Qualicum Beach.
The Retro Ringers of Knox United Church and the Beaux and Belles handbell choir of St. Mark’s will ring out the joyous sounds of Christmas woven together by the poetry of Ann Weems, according to a news release.
"We are lucky to have two handbell choirs right here in Oceanside both directed by Janet Goos," the release said. "If you need a quiet hour in the midst of your Christmas preparation, come to Kneeling In Bethlehem."
A harpist and a violinist will set the scene for a gentle hour of Christmas music.
The choir of St. Mark’s will offer two anthems and the congregation will join in singing some Christmas favourites, accompanied by Ron Klusmeier on piano and Richard de Candole on guitar.
Handbells came about in the 17th Century when the ringing of tower bells disturbed the sleep of the entire town, even during practice. In the 1830’s handbells were introduced to North America and today there are many handbell choirs across Canada.
Admission is by donation with all proceeds going to Jasper to help the Anglican Church build anew out of the ashes.
