You may be hard-pressed to find a more unexpected singing duo than veteran, award-winning Canadian chanteuse Joëlle Rabu and Nigerian-born rising star Buwa.
Born on opposite sides of the world and decades apart, they have nonetheless met their musical match in one another. The pair will perform their newest show "Just the 2 of Us" at Knox United Church in Parksville on March 22, according to a news release.
The show is a celebration of Rabu and Buwa’s favourite music spanning six decades and a half a dozen genres; from Piaf, Garland, Dietrich and Streisand; to Aretha Franklin and Etta James; from Elton John to Amy Winehouse; and Janis Joplin to Prince and beyond.
"Though nostalgia abounds, they interpret each song through the lens of their diverse experiences and showcase the enduring power of music to transcend borders and generations," the release said. "Humour, engaging banter from the nostalgic playful to the edgy risqué is always on the menu with these two singers."
Joining Rabu and Buwa on the stage is Nico Rhodes, (piano), Brad Shipley (guitar and mandolin) and Alexandra Lee (cello).
The music starts at 7:30 p.m. at Knox United Church, located at 345 Pym St. Doors open at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $35 and are available online through Eventbrite and with cash at local retailers Close to You Boutique, Edge Outdoors and Fireside Books.
