Malaspina Choir and the Sinclair Singers rehearse for their upcoming concert 'A Child’s Christmas in Wales'.

Malaspina Choir and the Sinclair Singers invite the community to carol along during their concert on Dec. 14 at Knox United Church in Parksville.

Actor Adrian Hough will be the special guest and will narrate A Child’s Christmas in Wales, while the singers intersperse the readings with 14 carols such as 'Carol of the Bells' and 'Hark, the Herald Angels Sing!', according to a news release by Malaspina Choir.

For many, listening to Dylan Thomas’ voice is a tradition every Christmas. This year, audiences can experience celebrated actor Hough recreating Thomas’ reading of A Child’s Christmas in Wales.

Some of the musical arrangements are traditional, while others are newly-composed. The audience is invited to sing along with the choirs’ 80 voices for three of the carols — one of which you may recognize from A Charlie Brown’s Christmas.

“Collaboration is such an important aspect of choral life in the central Island. We welcome Sharon Sinclair’s talented young adults to the stage,”  said Malaspina Choir’s artistic director, Fiona Blackburn. “They will sing their own pieces and join with Malaspina Choir for a number of carols. Collaborative pianist, Stefanie Unger, is quickly becoming a mainstay in the musical community; and having Adrian Hough recreating the Welsh poet, will truly bring Thomas’ prose to life.”

The performers aim to create lots of fun, laughter and Christmas cheer. Also, they hope to fulfill the holiday tradition for those who may enjoy A Child’s Christmas in Wales in a live performance.

The concert starts at 3 p.m. on Dec. 14 at Knox United Church (345 Pym St.).

There will also be an evening concert on Dec. 13 at St. Andrew’s United Church in Nanaimo, which starts at 7 p.m.

These concerts are family-friendly and are suitable for school-aged children.

Tickets $30 for adults and $13.50 for youth under 25. Children under 12 are free.

They are available online from The Port Theatre Box Office, by calling  250-754-8550 or with cash sales at the door.
